Jazzfest snapshot: Rocketman!

Many of you locals will remember Jimmy Descant, formerly of Mid-City, New Orleans, the Rocketman who turns vintage vaccuum cleaners into supercool rocketships. Mr. Descant lives in Salida, Colorado now, but has returned for one weekend only at the Fest. His booth contains all sort of fascinating detrius, including bowling ball lights and iron frames for your peephole. This piece took my breath away. Her name is "I Am Not Katrina, Katrina Is Not Me." Like any true piece of New Orleans art, she's got a fan and a spoon -- the two staples of New Orleans life.

Need I tell you that it already sold? For $1800, no less, so get a good look at it here. This angel is an original, and yet she speaks for all of us here in New Orleans. We are not Katrina, Katrina is not us.
