The weekend's national news wire was filled with disbelief that New Orleans would decide to re-elect Jefferson to congress. CNN implied that a large African American contingent may have been to blame: "Jefferson drew widespread support among blacks who are skeptical of the federal government's motives in its investigation of him." Really there are three reasons why Jefferson won. Harry Lee, HUD, and Karen Carter.

Harry Lee: Really this is the fault of another Lee, Spike Lee. You remember that flier Sheriff Harry sent out a couple weeks back. Harry Lee reminded the West Bank part of Jefferson's district that Karen Carter could care less about protecting their homes in the event of a storm. He pointed out her quote in Spike Lee's slanted flood movie. She would of forced Jefferson Parish to take evacuating New Orleanians who were rushing across the West Bank Expressway. She would have allowed them to roam the streets without the homeowners even in town. She would have given away your home's security. Or at least that's what her lines implied and what Harry Lee told the West Bank portion of Jefferson's district.

HUD: Strangely enough those same people Harry Lee used to scare the 'wank' made up part of a group of people who recently found out that HUD was going to tear down their homes without caring what they thought. Yup Public Housing is being demolished (for good reasons) and the people who lived there are reasonably upset. And when that last meeting was held to find out what they thought should happen after the demolition, Jefferson was there to say its horrible what the national program is doing to the projects. He implied that their trashing of the projects was just like their trashing of him. In fact a vote for him would be a vote against those who want to be rid of public housing.


Karen Carter: Or rather those great right leaning commercials that accused her of being pro-gay marriage, pro cloning and pro abortion. If you look at the current demographics of the district we are starting to become a right leaning city (though you'd have to be stupid to lean with the party that shied away from us due to our governor's party) and this means anyone on the pro-choice/pro-clone/pro-homosexual is sure to be taken down a peg.

Yup you read it right. Racist middle class fearing their neighbors looting their homes (I thought it was the Texans who did that), poor fearing losing their subsidized housing (I thought section 8 housing was added to all the new major apartment complexes with government covered rent) and right wing nutcases fearing loss of morals re-elected a congressman who has yet to be charged in an over a year old investigation. Funny how we like our corruption, remember Edwards was elected governor four times before going to federal prison.
